Formed in the year 1999, the group is based in the city of Trieste (north-east of Italy) and often cooperates with Brazilian singers and dancing groups. It’s one of the most active and most important groups in Italy for this kind of music, with hundreds of live shows of any kind: from concerts to street parades, including the classical Carnival parade. Banda Berimbau played in the whole country in Italy, including some participation to local, national and international TV and radio shows. The main performances include the concert at the White Night in Naples in October 2005 and the two ones held in Brasil in January 2006, in Salvador de Bahia, for the Festa de Bomfim and the Festa de Ribera, receiving the attention of the local Brazilian media. The band has also been hosted live on MTV’s TRL show, held in Trieste in June 2006 and has played at the famous Exit Fest in Novi Sad in Serbia (www.exitfest.org), one of the main music summer events in Europe) both in 2006 and 2007. The band also played at Rototom Reggae Sunsplash (the biggest reggae festival in Europe) in Osoppo (UD), Italy both in 2006 and 2007 (opening act for Olodum) and at Festival LatinoAmericando of Milan, the biggest and most important latin music festival in Europe, where the band performed together with members of the Samba School Mangueira of Rio de Janeiro. For New Year’s Eve 2007, Banda Berimbau performed at the festival organized by the Municipality of Venice in San Marco Square, and has also played there for 2007 Venice Carnival (Thursday and Tuesday’s Carnival days). Banda Berimbau often performed abroad too: Slovenia, Serbia, Switzerland and Croatia (with a long tour of all major cities), and United Arab Emirates, for the Dubai Shopping Festival (www.mydsf.com), one of the main music events of the Arab world, which attracts millions of people every year for 45 days. At the end of 2007, 3 exhibitions in Abu Dhabi for the UAE National Day celebrations, and from the half of December further 40 gigs in Dubai, until the end of January. On September 22nd 2007 the band has performed in Bucarest, for the first White Night ever organized in Romania, front of a crowd of 100.000 people. In May 2007 some members of Stomp (www.stomp.co.uk) have been Banda Berimbau’s guests for a joined rehearsing session. The band also had the honour to open the concert of the legendary Brazilian musician Gilberto Gil, when he participated to the Rototom Reggae Sunsplash in 2003, live on national radio and with video shots broadcast by the Brazilian TV. During the shows, Banda Berimbau plays various afro-brazilian rhythms, from the typical samba enredo of Rio de Janeiro to the evocative rhytms of the blocos afro de Bahia and the Nordeste (samba-reggae, maracatù, ijexa, funky). 10% out of all income of the band is given as charity to the Association Cidade Da Crianca of Salvador de Bahia, a school for children and kids located inside a town’s favela.
