Pandeiro

A heavier version of the common tamborine (not "tamborim"). It is played rhythmically and also spun on the finger for show.

Passista

"Passista" comes from the root word "Passiar" or to walk or stroll and literally means "one who walks." A girl solo dancer who is younger and unmarried (symbolically). She is chosen to for her excellent skills in dancing to the samba beat of the bateria, whether it be one instrument, or the full bateria. The ala of passistas dance in front of bateria and they are accompanied with talented male dancers playing their pandeiros and courting the passistas. Passistas are also noted for the physical beauty and bikini costumes.

A participant in the samba parade. Usually a member of an "ala" or group.

Porta Bandeira

The "flag bearer" of the samba school that carries the school flag wearing a very elaborate and ornate hoop dress. This is traditionally a woman.

Puxador

Pronounced "pooshador", this term refers to a the samba singer. This word is falling out of fashion and is being replaced by "Interprete".
