Carnavalesco
The artistic director and designer of the carnival samba parade. This person usually designs the costumes, floats, and sequence of groups in the carnival parade.
Caixa
A drum very similar to the repinique (see below) but with springs on the bottom to create vibration much like a snare drum
Carnival / Carnaval
A non-religious holiday associated with the Christian religious week of lent where everyone parties and celebrates before ash Wednesday when all Catholics must abstain for such behavior for and extended period of time. In Brazil it starts on the Saturday before Ash Wednesday and ends midnight Tuesday night. In many parts of the world this is called Mardi Gras.
Cavaquinho / Cavaco
A small 4-stringed instrument used in samba music. Originating in Portugal, it also was the inspiration for the Hawaiian instrument the ukulele.
Carro Alegóico
A float in a carnival parade.
Chucalho
A shaker made of either many small cymbal like metal pieces or a large metal cans filled with rocks, sand or other material.
Cuica
The most distinctive sounding of all samba instruments, the Cuica (pronounced "queekaa") is a small drum with a stick attached to the middle of the drum head which is rubbed by the player with a piece of damp cloth or cotton. The friction on the stick causes the head of the Cuica to vibrate and "squeak". The pitch of the squeak can be changed by applying pressure to the drum head and change the tension.
