Batucaxe is at once a school, a performance group, and a community of drum, dance and song. Our Community Drum Group provides a joyful opportunity to learn the basics of Brazilian percussion instruments, and how to play them in an ensemble. Our weekly Dance Classes feature the electricity of Brazilian, West African and other dance styles, with our drummers setting the beat. And our Performing Group is a smaller ensemble of dancers, instrumentalists and vocalists that shares the excitement of our music to a wider range of audiences.

The amazing and unique sounds of Brazil come to Campbell Hall with this first semester elective course for high school aged students. The class uses all traditional instruments specific to each region of the many styles of music that Brazil is home to. Student taking the class gain performance skills, techniques and an appreciation and sometimes a love for the heritage and culture of one of the world greatest musical influences. Styles learned range from traditional samba, bossa nova, and batucada of Rio to samba reggae and axe music of Bahia, and unique genres of the North East including Forro’s, Rural Maracatu, and Frevo, and sometime MPB doing covers of Gilberto Gil to Maria Rita. The class gives great respect to the music by replicating the tradition and instrumentation in the purest way possible also incorporating melodic instruments such as the cavaquino and the sinfona, students also learn basic Portuguese phrases and get sing is a cantor-corro style sometimes commissioning work from Brazilian composers who live in Rio. The curriculum also includes a guest dance instructor who will come to one class and introduce the students to basic samba dance steps. The course performs several concerts throughout the year and is concluded with celebration in a traditional churrasco. The class is founded and led by Los Angeles Percussionist, Drummer and Composer Jason Lee Bruns who has studied extensively in Brazil and has apprenticed with the likes of Pandeiro master Carlinhos Pandeiro de Ouro and Marcos Suzanno.

Diaspora performs the powerful percussive rhythms of the blocos afros of Bahia, Brazil. After centuries of racial repression, the ancestors of African slaves, who make up 80% of Bahia's population, are now celebrating their heritage through their music, other arts, and lifestyles. The bloco afro and samba-reggae rhythms Diaspora performs are from the mid-Atlantic African diaspora: a mixture of Brazilian samba, Jamaican reggae, and West African drumming. We perform mainly club shows and street jams for dancing. The music is sensuous and powerful, as well as spiritual.

Energia do Samba was founded in 2000 by Maisa Duke, the director and choreographer of the group. Maisa was borned in Salvador-Bahia, Brazil.
What distinguishes Energia do Samba from other Brazilian performance groups in the United States, in the strong influence of Bahia. Most people are familiar with the Rio (from Rio de Janeiro) style samba.
Due to the proliferation of samba schools throughout the world, it is rare to see Bahia-style samba outside Brazil. Bahia-style samba is characteristically more playful and joyful, as compared to the Rio style, which is often accompanied by lyrics that tend to be serious social commentary.

Samba Olywa (based in OLYmpia, WAshington) is an amateur percussion and dance group dedicated to building community through the learning and sharing of Samba and other rhythms. We provide the opportunity for anyone, regardless of experience, to join us as we take our spirited and joyous energy to the streets and to the stage.
It all started in 1995 as part of the Procession of the Species Celebration, The Olympia community's honoring of our natural world through the public making and sharing of art, music and dance. At first the group formed just for the Procession; little by little there were invitations to play for other events. About 1998 the group began practicing and gigging year round.
Samba Olywa performs several times a year throughout the Puget Sound region. Our performances range from small performances at private functions, to large community celebrations throughout the Sound. Visit our Photos and Clips pages for photos and clips of previous gigs.

sambAmore was born out of the artistic community in which we call home,
Humboldt County. Drumming and dancing have long been a strong influence
in this area. The dance and drum relationship is rooted deep in African
community celebration. Jesse Jonathon, music director for sambAmore and
a graduate of Humboldt State's Music Department found a passion for
community music and dance. It was his desire to mix drumming and
dancing with a powerful melodic presence, so he recruited a band of
brass and woodwind players to perform his original compositions and
arrangements. Andelain L. Roy, dance director for sambAmore, was born
and raised dancing in Humboldt. Andelain shares the same passion for
community celebration, dancing in her first parade in 1991. Andelain
leading the dancers and Jesse leading the band the group can be found
playing parades and stage performances to inspire their community and
encourage Humboldt to sambAmore.

Super Sonic Samba School plays traditional samba rhythms of Brazil, featuring live percussionists, singers and dancers. The school was founded in 1990 and since that time it has become a fixture in Southern California and Northern Baja, performing at parades, festivals, weddings, clubs, grassroots demonstrations, corporate mixers, schools, parties and special events.
The school performs a range of styles: from the Rio de Janeiro Carnaval marching drums of samba enredo to the jamming samba reggae of Northeastern Brazil.
The school is based on the traditional samba schools of Brazil - social groups that meet to learn and perform samba and other rhythms of their culture. These groups serve to pass down these cultural roots from one generation to the next, with the main goal of performing in the world's largest Carnaval performance in Rio de Janeiro just before lent. Super Sonic was founded with these ideas in mind.

Founded in 2001, VamoLa maintains a core of roughly 25 drummers and 10 dancers. We rehearse and perform year round, and are dedicated to the root forms of Brazilian music and dance; primarily samba, samba reggae, and a little maracatu and mangue-beat, with respect to our North American roots with inclusions of hip-hop and funk. VamoLa brings to life the exuberant spirit of Carnaval and the rowdy energy of a street bloco.
We perform in a variety of Northwest festivals and parades, including Bumbershoot, Folklife, and our biggest event of the year, the Fremont Summer Solstice Parade, where we often more than double our ranks performing original songs using a large float that includes a PA system with amplified singers and instrumental musicians.
VamoLa occasionally sponsors workshops with master artists such as Jorge Alabe, Dandha, and Boca Rum, and welcomes new members who have some experience and are eager to learn our material and gain proficiency on their instrument or as a dancer.
