Where are the roots of the Samba festival? Did the slaves bring it from Africa?

Whilst the usuage of the term Mestre is related to experience - what is the term 'Musical Director' - as used by Samba Bands in Western Countries - related to? Can anyone who 'conducts' existing pieces call themselves this? If so, why are they not referred to as 'Musical Conductors'? The term 'Director' is generally a business term.
I hear everyone outside of Brazil use the word "mestre" for music or percussion directors. But Brazilians have told me they are not mestres but "diretores" or directors. What is correct?'
Every group outside of Brazil seems to call themselves a "Samba School". What exactly is a "Samba School"?
